Ship’s Master - Key Responsibilities & Qualifications
Leadership & Command
Ultimate Authority: Acts as the company's top representative onboard, responsible for the vessel’s safety, seaworthiness, and all personnel.
Final Responsibility: Oversees all departments—concessionaires, owners, crew—to ensure smooth operations.
Reporting Line: Reports directly to the AVP, Nautical Operations & Fleet Captain.
Safety & Navigation
Safety First: Prioritizes the safety of guests, crew, and ship above all. Enforces strict safety protocols and accident prevention.
Navigation Excellence: Ensures all navigation plans, policies, and procedures are executed flawlessly. Supervises Voyage & Passage Planning.
Bridge Team: Develops strong working relationships with pilots and bridge officers; monitors pilot actions.
Training & Crew Development
Mentor & Trainer: Responsible for the ongoing training of Deck Officers and Crew.
Bridge Resource Management: Promotes sound navigation practices at all levels.
Environmental & Regulatory Compliance
Environmental Stewardship: Ensures compliance with international, national, and company environmental policies.
Incident Response: Notifies authorities and company officials immediately in case of environmental or safety incidents.
Training: Ensures crew proficiency in environmental systems.
Guest Experience & Service
Guest Relations: Creates a welcoming atmosphere, engaging with guests, and ensuring high standards of service.
Visibility: Regularly interacts with guests—greetings, social activities, and feedback collection.
Team Inspiration: Leads by example in attitude, professionalism, and guest care.
Operational Excellence
Cost & Efficiency: Monitors expenses, manages the vessel within budget, and seeks operational improvements.
Embarkation & Disembarkation: Has the authority to refuse entry/disembarkation if safety or discipline is at risk.
Legal Compliance: Fully aware of and compliant with all maritime laws and regulations.
Vessel & Crew Management
Vessel Knowledge: Familiar with ship’s systems, safety equipment, and passenger facilities.
Training: Provides practical training to Staff Captain and crew, especially in ship handling.
Succession: Ensures clear command succession plans are in place (Staff Captain, Chief Safety Officer, senior officers).
Inspection & Maintenance
Regular Inspections: Conducts weekly ship-wide checks; ensures cleanliness and safety standards.
Certificates & Documentation: Keeps all certificates up-to-date; supervises logbook accuracy.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness
Emergency Planning: Understands and executes the Safety & Quality Management Program.
Mass Casualty & Crisis: Responsible for emergency response actions as per the Emergency & Station Bill.
Additional Responsibilities
Communication: Maintains open, clear communication with the shore office and onboard teams.
Confidentiality: Keeps company information confidential; refrains from unauthorized press statements.
Performance & Appraisal: Participates in crew evaluations and performance reviews.
Qualifications & Skills
Unlimited Master’s License (STCW compliant)
Proven Leadership: Experience managing a ship and crew, with strong organizational skills.
Navigation & Safety Training: Demonstrated knowledge of bridge management, firefighting, environmental awareness.
Experience: Minimum one trip as relief Master (if new to vessel type or itinerary).
Personal Skills: Effective communicator, decision-maker, team builder, and problem solver.
