Role Overview :

The Traffic Investigator will provide support to the Fort Wayne District Traffic Engineering team by collecting and analyzing various field data for internal and external traffic safety and mobility concerns. Potential duties may include:

  • Analyzing crash data for any discernible patterns or issues that could be addressed
  • Measuring free-flow vehicular speeds to determine if speed limit changes are warranted
  • Conducting traffic counts at intersections
  • Collecting various other field data
  • Updating traffic asset inventories, including highway signs and pavement markings
  • Conducting a monthly inspection of highway lighting to prepare a report of outages that need to be repaired

 

Location :

This position is located in INDOT’s Fort Wayne Sub District.

 

CDL Positions :

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

 

Salary :

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $47,320.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Calibrates, operates, and evaluates data from multiple specialize test systems at Materials and Tests; Obtain CDL license to assist in District snow removal operations;
  • Follows all related safety standards and conducts/participates in safety briefing.
  • Performs research, preliminary data analysis and collects quality data on multiple specialized testing systems.
  • Performs and maintains calibration of test systems to prescribed federal and state specifications.
  • Performs maintenance, repair and system upgrades to laboratory test systems.
  • Assists Laboratory Manager in conducting multiple laboratory tests and data analysis.
  • Assist with Facilities and B&G repair and maintenance.

What You'll Need for Success:

The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid driver license.
  • Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.

Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience. 

  • Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather.
  • Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • The ability to read, interpret and follow technical documents such as AASHTO, ASTM, INDOT specifications, and Indiana Test Methods (ITM);
  • Basic knowledge of and the ability to operate and maintain material testing equipment. 
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
