Job Summary

In collaboration with the Director of Surgical Services, the charge nurse is responsible for the smooth and efficient flow of all phases of care within the surgical department. Delegates assignments and provides supervision for the OR staff. Works in cooperation with surgeons to ensure quality patient care and efficient management of surgical procedures. Provides direct patient care to patients in all phases of care as needs arise. Assist OR scheduler in management of surgeon’s block schedules, anesthesia schedule and decisions related to changes in the OR schedule.

Primary Job Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates competency and professional responsibility in the charge nurse role.
2. Coordinates education for OR staff.
3. Assigns and adjusts staffing assignments as needed to meet the needs of the department. This includes time off request and sick time.
4. Anticipates and collaborates with surgeons and anesthesia providers to meet their surgical case needs.
5. Provides direct patient care if department needs arise.
6. Coordinates surgical equipment needs for cases with OR techs and Central Supply Supervisor.
7. Excellent communication skills.
8. Rotating on call schedule with the department director to meet after hours needs. 
9. Coordinates surgical case and patient care needs with all nursing and ancillary departments.

Required Qualifications

1. Currently RN license (valid in State of Illinois OR can be transferred)
2. Minimum Experience: one year as operating room staff nurse
3. BLS/ACLS/PALS certification

Preferred Qualifications

1. 2 years of experience as OR charge nurse or operating room supervisor
